Data has become the most powerful thing in the modern era and no business can survive without accessing, storing and using data in the best possible way. But the amount of data being produced by businesses on everyday basis is increasing every year and managing such a gigantic amount of data on an everyday basis is becoming problematic and this is why powerful, advanced and big data centers are being deployed in order to manage, store and access data. If you are technological buff or related to the technological world then you must be aware of the concept of data centers. From Google to Facebook, each and every company working with data has its own data center. But every company doesn’t have its own data center because building and managing data centers is very costly. This is why most of the small and medium-sized businesses buy only space from a third-party data center. But do you know anything about the type of data center? Yes, there are different types of data centers. You might be thinking that there is only one type of data center but that’s not true. Let’s look at the different types of data centers and understand their limits and power. Hyperscale data center A hyperscale data center is also known as an enterprise hyperscale data center. It is one of the most advanced data centers available in the current era. These types of data centers are owned, build and managed by the company that supports it and this is why it is used by only giant firms. Hyperscale data center is no feasible for small and medium-sized businesses and this is why it is used by industry leaders like Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc. In this type of data center, hyperscale computing becomes a necessity for big data storage and also for cloud. On average, there are almost 5,000 servers linked to a high speed, high count fiber network. You should know that the average size of the hyperscale data center is around 1000 sq. feet and they are really one of the biggest types of data centers. In addition to this, there are nearly 500 cabinets upwards but it can have even 450 cabinets upwards as well. The high fiber count is one of the main differences between hyperscale data centers and other type of data centers. Colocation data center Colocation data center is that type of data center where the owner of the single data center sells cooling, power, and space of the data center different firms and other hyperscale customers at different locations. In this type of data center, interconnection is one of the biggest drivers. You should know that a collocation data center offers interconnection to software as a service like Salesforce or even Platform as a Service like Azure. With this, businesses are able to utilize all the power of a robust and advanced data center without dealing with much complexity. The companies that own collocation data center provide guidance to those firms that don’t what they need or don’t want to deal with the hassle of sourcing and delivering it. The colocation data centers have a completely different design and in this type of data center, selected integrators guidance, specification and technical design for migrating customers. Wholesale colocation data center There is a single owner in case of wholesale data center and that single owner sells power, space and cooling to hyperscale firms and enterprises just like standard collocation. But one important thing to know about wholesale colocation data centers is that interconnection is not really necessary. This type of data center is basically used by big companies to hold their IT infrastructure. The wholesale collocation supports fewer customers in comparison to the standard collocation data center. The number of customers wholesale colocation data centers can serve depends on the size. The number of cabinets in a wholesale colocation data center can vary from 100 to 1000+ in the case of a wholesale collocation data center. In most of the cases, the wholesale colocation data center provides cooling, power, and space. So, in addition to the number of customers, it can serve, the wholesale collocation data center also varies in interconnection. Enterprise data cente The enterprise data center is the third type of data center and its design and functioning is completely different from the above-mentioned data centers. The enterprise data center is mostly built on-site but in some cases, it can be built off-site as well. In addition to this, the enterprise data center facility is owned by the company it supports. Certain portion of the enterprise data center is allocated to different sections of a business. This type of data center may use other companies on initial fit-outs and network installation before the in-house IT team starts managing it. It can be as large as 40MW+ and can have 10 cabinets upwards. Telecom data center A telecom data center is a type of data center that is basically owned by a telecommunication company like AT&T and Verizon. But this type of data center can also be owned by simply a service provider company. High connectivity is the driver of the business and therefore, without high connectivity, a telecom data center won’t be able to function properly. The telecom data center is responsible for cloud services, mobile services and even for driving content delivery. 2 post or 4 post racks are the most common types of racks used in telecom data centers. But cabinets are also becoming prevalent.
The company that owns the data center uses its own staff to manage and install the site and continual routine. You should that there are some telecom companies that run data centers within Data Centers. Different types of data centers serve different purposes and there is nothing like the best data center. But if you are looking forward to design a data center then it becomes important for you to get familiar with the different types of data centers.
