The year 2018 has started with some bad news which is about the two vulnerabilities which are
going to affect Intel, AMD and ARM computing architectures: Meltdown and Spectre.
First of all, let’s understand Meltdown and Spectre. These are basically hardware bugs which
were first discovered by a couple of security researchers and after its discovery; it was widely
reported in the media as well. The Meltdown affects the most fundamental isolation of user
application from the operating system and this can allow the program to access the memory
which is being used by another program or an operating system. Whereas, the Spectre bug can
break the isolation between an error-free application.
What are we doing about it?
You should know that the real problem isn’t on our end and it’s from the vendors end. The bug is
not specific to only our service but is affecting many other computing platforms as well like
smartphone, PC, Desktop and database infrastructure. And you should also know that these bugs
can’t be addressed through microcode updates like hardware updates. As soon as the bug is
resolved from the vendor’s end, the problem will be resolved and for that, they must be
addressed with software patches at the OS level.
We have already installed the updates for the Microsoft and we are keeping an eye for the next
updates. As soon as the next updates will be available on their platform, we will install them on
our server.
